When I used the copy of partition for migration, I discovered that the
device special files were not correctly copied. I had to manually
reconstruct this (some of it was not in MAKEDEV). I also found the
better way to mirror was:
find /SomeSource -print -xdev | cpio -pdm SomeDestination

That works with device special files. I know you said you were positive
about the copy of partitions, but it sounds like exact copy failed.
