I happened the same using gcc-2.95.3 with 1.0 release.
You should use egcs (2.91.66), but I guess turning off additional
debugging support (both flags) for xfs could let gcc-2.95.3 build an
"at least booting" kernel.

why don't you get 2.4.5 from kernel.org and use the 1.0.1 patches?
