it works fine with devfs.  using it here right now. (2.4.2-SGI_XFS_1.0
xfs root + NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1251)

just add the following two lines to you /etc/rc.d/rc.local at the end

mknod /dev/nvidiactl c 195 255
mknod /dev/nvidia0 c 195 0

so that the dev entries are created on boot up each time.
