I have at home a 8x 80gb ide setup with 3ware 8port card (jbod config),
running sw raid5 and xfs. I can get 45mbps out of it straight, without
any tunning. Which is more than enough for this music & movie box :) Cpu
is athlon 750, 256mb ram. All this (+2 small ide drives for system) is
squeezed into standard midi tower case. With some additional fans it
runs cool enough to not cause problems. The only thing to look for in
such setup is a bit more muscular powersupply; 3ware card spins all
drives at once, altough i don't see the reason why they didnt implement
it in the way scsi controllers start disks one by one ... 
So far it worked without problems, with xfs enhanced rh 2.4.2 kernel.
