ksymoops -v needs the uncompressed vmlinux that can be found in the top
level of your linux compilation tree.  vmlinuz is vmlinux after
stripping, compressing and adding a boot loader, it has no useful
symbols.  So do ksymoops -v /usr/src/2.4.6-pre3/vmlinux.  In any case,
vmlinux is only used as a cross check on the integrity of the
System.map, ksymoops can run without vmlinux and the default is not to
read vmlinux.
