There is a entry below that reads 
CC              = $(CROSS_COMPILE)kgcc

Use that one please. I think it is still trying to build it with a 2.96
version. when your output produces compile strings reading kgcc .... well
I'll believe you.

Can't think of anything more subtle at the moment.
