How did you copy the files into XFS, are you using NFS? and which kernel
version are you using?
I just did some quick checks and I am not seeing similar behavior. It appears
that space preallocated into files on your system is not getting freed when
the file closes. XFS presumes you are going to keep writing to a file, so
tends to overallocate, but the extra space is supposed to be removed at
close time.
Also, if you unmount the filesystem, and remount it does the size increase
persist?
