Large File support and Glibc 2.X

  Do I need Glibc 2.2 (Linux) to get files larger athan 2³¹ (2 GB) ?
 I found that i had to upgrade once or twice to get that to work.
 Someone is telling me that Glibc 2.1.3 will work too.
