I've compiled the CVS code with gcc 2.96-85 to see if it would work better
than -81. The single mode f/s corruption that I reported before has gone,
but it's entirely possible that it's a compiler issue (most of these
mysterious things are, it seems...).

I'll try to hook up a serial console to the box.
