It depends on how much demand you put on that server. You can get a machine from SGI that can do amazing amount of processing and file serving - far beyond that of x86 hardware. But if you only have 20-80 (or so - Thanks for your comments. Performance hadn't crossed my mind: my concern is stability and the apparent difficulty in migrating toward more stability on a production server.
