OK -- I went back to 2.2.19 -- in order to test the hardware. I've
been toasting the ext2 partition over nfs for about 6 hours now and it
is still up. The HW must be ok.

Next step -- try a clean 2.4.4 system. I'll let you know. I really
want to run xfs.
