Just my $0.02 worth here ....
Seems to me that not installing LILO would more than likely be your
problem. I have a couple of systems with drives that run past the 1024
cylinder mark with no /boot partition that boot just fine after the 7.1
installation. lba32 is installed by default (whether you keep it under
the 1024 mark or not) and it works fine. You might just try booting from
the installation disks again and using the rescue option to install a
lilo.
