alsa and vmware sticks their stuff in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/misc which
is the old naming scheme.

nvidia sticks their one module (without the .o I should mention) in
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/video which is also the old naming convention..

not sure dude was insinuating that they were in the kernel subdirectory...
