I am sure that this will come as a surprise to Red Hat, who are
shipping Red Hat 7.1 with a kernel compiled with gcc 2.96

The kernel issue was with kernels 2.2 and before, which had incorrect
code in them that previous versions of gcc would accept.  With the
move to 2.4, this issue is gone.
