Cannot really help with this on the xfs list - try linux-kernel, we do not
have anything funny in there except kdb (Keith Owens would probably know,
but he is off skiing for 3 weeks). Also look in 
linux/Documentation/serial-console.txt

I have noticed that the serial console is not responding to input outside
of kdb and lilo though. It maybe that something changed in 2.4.3 serial code
which requires kdb changes, hmm there is a 2.4.3-pre8 kdb, I will see if
we are missing some code.
