Since we know 1.1.2 works just about everybody internally is sticking
with the compiler for now.

2.96 is known not to work with XFS, brief attempts to fix the problem
has not yielded working xfs kernels.
Since the gcc people are stating 2.96 shouldn't be used for
anything production, we do not want to put effort into fixing
XFS to work with it.

We have not tested pre gcc -3.0 internally but somebody did report
things working.
Hopefully we will have some time to investigate 3.0 in the near future.
