I've found that the easiest way to do this is just to use the rescue
fuctionality of the installation boot disk. Just grab the boot.img from
the sgi download site and write it to a floppy just like you would if you
were gonna do a floppy boot installation. Then when it gives you the
boot: prompt type in "linux rescue". It will go through the language and
probably keyboard stuff and then drop you into a root prompt with a
ramdisk as the root filesystem. From there you can mount your hard disk
filesystems and make whatever changes you need to to get the system workin
again.
