 It is also a devfs problem - I posted about this a week or so back.
Turn off devfs entirelty and run a 'traditional' /dev. 
 My machine at least, started working with PCMCIA (I wanted to read CF
cards from my cammera)

devfs=nomount I think. Thats what I did to my Dell laptop.
