Hi Eric and all,
BTW since I now know about your installer caveats I see I was using the
wrong (original) RH7.0 install CDs (for the procedure I used with your
pre-release ISO).

Thanks. Knowing how to create my own devices is beyond me at this stage. I
was not able to properly mount /dev/hde1 and received this error message:
mount failed: block device required.
I was however able to mount /dev/hde1 on the loopback device. This allowed
me to access the partition. Unfortunately lilo would not accept the
configuration info because /dev/hde1 was not "properly" mounted.
/tmp contained:
cdrom, loop, modules.conf (just a link for the ||port), and syslog.
So at this stage I'll probably have to leave my attempt to install the
pre-release ISO and await an ext2 conversion procedure or utility.

I am almost certain the original RH7.0 install CD gives me this option (the
option is also listed in the LHS help text of the installer).

OK. Best wishes for the development.
