Try modprobe ide-cd and then look in /dev/cdroms/

devfs is included by default and does not appear to be autoloading
the ide cdrom code, you can turn this off by building your
own kernel - which I would recommend to include the drivers and
disk subsystems you use directly into the kernel (and xfs too!)
This will speed up system boot considerably, and get rid of the need
for an initial ram disk.
