At boot prompt, type the kernel label and append "init=/bin/sh".  Gives
you a single user system without executing the startup scripts.  You
have to "mount -o remount,rw /" to make any changes to /.  To shutdown
from this mode, "mount -o remount,ro /", sync a couple of times then
"halt -fn".
