I somehow managed to trip this assertion yesterday, but have been
unable to reproduce it since.  this was after creating a few
hundred directories with several files of varying size in each,
then iteratively removing them (files and directories).

this was with yesterdays top-of-tree source.  not sure whether its
useful to anyone, but here it is anyway...
