HARDWARE SPCIFICATION:
Notebook, Acer Aspire 5520 using the following controller:
00:06.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP67 IDE Controller (rev a1)
00:09.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP67 AHCI Controller (rev a2)
LINUX DISTRIBUTION:
Ubuntu 7.10
default kernel from distro: 2.6.22-14
At present, this controller is not managed by any driver in Ubuntu kernel.
If I should compile myself the kernel, I could used pata_amd (this driver has
been remove from ubuntu kernel).
In order to boot, I must append into boot loader the string "all_generic_ide".
I have installed the system many times the same day, and after each reboot I had
messages like "file missing", or when running ldconfig I was
getting messages like: the file blabla_blabla.so is truncated, or is
corrupted... I had to perform installation once again.
I also noticed that 'sync' command was always taking a long time to complete
(even if I was doing almost nothing on the system).
No warning in dmesg, no warning were written to logs.
After several installation attempts i decided to move to reiser, and all problem
mentioned above disappeared.
I performed same kind of installation, using same drivers, same distribution,
but changing only filesystem.
the following is the output taken from lshw-gtk:
product: nVidia Corporation
vendor: nVidia Corporation
bus info: pci@0000:00:06.0
logical name: scsi0
version: a1
width: 32 bits
clock: 66MHz
capabilities:
ide,
Power Management,
bus mastering,
PCI capabilities listing,
Emulated device
configuration:
driver: ata_generic
latency: 0
maxlatency: 1
mingnt: 3
module: ata_generic
NOTE: please be aware that I don't have XFS installed anymore (as it is unusable
on this hardware), and I couldn't perform further test. The only thing I could
do is shrink one of my partitions, than create a supplementary XFS partition,
and than run some test on it.
p.s.: I have XFS running on another two systems, and it works perfectly!
cheers
Massimiliano
