It is a FC6 system, an upgrade from FC5 system.  Some time ago it was a FC3
system, hence the naming of lvm group /dev/mapper/fedora3-xxxxx

I'm really good at XFS internals, so I cannot really comment on <handwaiving/>
part.  But do let me know if you need more info, I would be glad to help with
fixing this issue.
