hmm ... doesn't seem to be that simple:

a.) yes - a 16k-stack-kernel on FC5 looks stable so far.

b.) I have another FC4 machine running:

[root@speedy ~]# modinfo xfs
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.17-1.2142_FC4/kernel/fs/xfs/xfs.ko
license: GPLescription: SGI XFS with ACLs, security attributes, large
block numbers, no debug enabled
author: Silicon Graphics, Inc.
srcversion: 8294F4FD8D88E8C09DF
depends:
vermagic: 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4 mod_unload 686 REGPARM 4KSTACKS gcc-4.0
[root@speedy ~]#

...and it's also md-mirrored (ATA and USB), and this doesn't crash.
one main difference I noticed is gcc-4.0 versus gcc-4.1 !

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.17-1.2187_FC5.stk16/kernel/fs/xfs/xfs.ko
author: Silicon Graphics, Inc.
description: SGI XFS with ACLs, security attributes, large block numbers, no
debug enabled
license: GPL
vermagic: 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5.stk16 mod_unload 686 REGPARM 16KSTACKS gcc-4.1
depends:
srcversion: 65F0D7BCDB23099FF11803D

hmmm ...
