[1.] SUMMARY: During rsync and heavy I/O operations, we experienced
abnormally slow response times on the file server.

[2.] DETAILED DESCRIPTION: This is taking place on the primary fileserver
for a cluster. It has a 4TB RAID array attached by Fibre Channel, that is
mounted over NFS. It runs a nightly cron job to sync over to a secondary
array, but I was running some scripts to do some off-schedule syncing and
the operations were taking a very long time. Specifically the "building
file list" stage. I looked at /var/log/messages and dmesg to see if there
was any indication of what was going on, and dmesg showed page allocation
failures as well as other error output from what looked to be XFS. I have
attached the output of dmesg, so you can see what is referred to. Based on
the contents of dmesg, it was difficult to determine if this was directly
related to NFS or XFS, since the error output mentions both.

[3.] Keywords: XFS, NFS, filesystems, kernel

[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version): Linux version 2.6.8-24.14-bigsmp (
geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 3.3.4 (pre 3.3.5 20040809)) #1 SMP Tue Mar 29
09:27:43 UTC 2005

[5.] Output of Oops.. message : N/A

[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
     problem (if possible): N/A

[7.7.] Other information that might be relevant to the problem
(please look in /proc and include all information that you
       think to be relevant):

cat /proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes
1024

[X.] Other notes, patches, fixes, workarounds:

I tried Christoph Hellwig's suggestion from
http://oss.sgi.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=345 of increasing the value of
/proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes. I set the value to 1024. The results were
the same. No change in performance, and errors persisted.

Thank you for your help!
