Due to popular demand, I've submitted the changes to the
GNU linker to implement IPA (interprocedural analysis) at:

http://sources.redhat.com/ml/binutils/2001-02/msg00553.html

This is used by -Ofast for example.

To actually make use of IPA will require the next release
of Pro64 (which is out Real Soon Now last I heard), but
interested parties can take a look right now.

There are also opportunities to contribute: let the binutils
mailing list know if you would actually use this feature
or if you can offer to help work on it that's even better.
Hard to say what the binutils maintainers reactions
will be (if any) - we haven't gotten a reaction yet
but we've only asked a few times.

We also expect to release the patched linker at
http://oss.sgi.com/projects/Pro64/ and keep doing
so until/unless it gets merged into GNU ld.

Thanks go to Ross Towle, Jack Carter, and Lilian Leung
for helping bring me up to speed on this.
