Dear All,
  I think I have learnt something about this problem. I trauled through some 
mailing lists and it appears that it is a problem that pops up with GNU ld 
from time to time. The solution is to split my large library archive into 
several smaller ones and then create a shared object library for each small 
archive. Then linking with the so files is ok.
