Dave/Nathan ... this backs out some of my interp.c related QA changes
and puts interp.c back pretty much the way it was.
I think this is the right state to be in for this release. I hope I can
make more progress with fixing the corner-case performance issues
without damaging the functionality in the next release, but it is
proving to be quite difficult.
qa/787 is still failing, but that is a reminder to fix this! Other -g
archive qa is all good.
