No further information on the original reason for pmcd exiting was forthcoming, and hundreds of fixes have gone in that may have resolved whatever it was in the meantime - so closing out. In terms of high-availability of daemons (like pmcd) - PaceMaker is apparently the generally prefered way of tackling this nowadays (http://clusterlabs.org/) and we apparently supply everything we need to from PCP (just init scripts are enough, I'm reliably informed by the PaceMaker developers).
