This sounds a lot like the use case that the hotproc PMDA is intended to
address ... the hotproc PMDA (in the original IRIX version) used a
configuration file to define what characterized an "interesting" process and
then allowed collection of arbitrary proc metrics for those processes that were
"interesting".
Soon I expect the new hotproc PMDA will be available, and it would be
interesting to see how well this matches Nicholas' needs.
