Don't think there is a better way, Martins. The requirement has not been
raised before (which is why the merge is unconditional), but your use case
seems entirely reasonable.

The only (!) issues will be fallout on the other pmlogger_daily tasks when
the unmerged archives appear in the archive directories (there is a bunch of
pattern matching that goes on here in the selection of files to cull and
optionally compress (not a requirement in your case, I expect)) and a man
page update and QA coverage and fallout ... so the patch solves the easy 25%
....
