I'm working on some more control over the pmlogmerge inputs.  While in
the area, the code might be made willing to let some intra-interval
(default: day) archives pile up unmerged, until the next interval.

It's already in the TODO.  Another possibility would be translucent
zlib support in libpcp and the archive generators.
