Hmm wonder where this came from, and why it has never bitten before ...

$ ls -l /usr/lib/pcp/bin/pmpost
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9732 Jul 25 10:19 /usr/lib/pcp/bin/pmpost

Removing the bogus one and problem solved.
