I am using the 3.1.1 branch of pcp and I've run across something I can't
explain.

I think the test I present (strace pmcd, compare the number of opens to the
number of closes) is... hokey. There is a metric built into pmcd which should
track this exact problem, pmcd.openfds. I have yet to observe this metric
increase while monitoring it. If I stop monitoring the metric and wait for
about a minute the value can jump remarkably.

When I simultaneously monitoring the opens and closes using strace and the
pmcd.openfds metric, I can see the number of open file descriptors increasing
without any change in the pmcd.openfds metric.

If there is something wrong with the pmcd.openfds metric, it would explain
why this problem wasn't picked up in regression testing.
