Further to my earlier answer, 261 was exposing a double-precision
arithmetic instability in the calculation of the number of samples to
report in pmval ... the answer was 9 for some versions of gcc on ia32
and ia64 and all IRIX C compilers, and 8 for some versions of gcc in
ia32.
The attached 261 fixes this.
