too many errors

I can't seem to do anything right today.

The correct version of 2.4 is 2.4.27-pre5.

I mixed the description and the contents of the re-send.

Jeff, if you would like me to correctly send these two patches another
day, let me know.  If you could figure out what I meant instead of
what I said, you're doing better than I. ;-)
