This can be reproduced easily using a set of scripts that perform file operations and the XFS partition's logsize is set to a size of 576b. * Steps to Reproduce 1) mkfs.xfs -b size=1024 -l size=576b 2) mount the volume 3) copy check-files, create-files, and copy-files to partition (in the attached archive) 4) run ./create-files 5) run ./copy-files 6) wait about 2-4 hours, the dots will stop printing and check dmesg * Actual Results An xfs kernel task hangs, and a backtrace occurs. Output has been placed in this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/979498 In addition are logs that have been requested in this email thread: http://oss.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2012-04/msg00951.html * Expected Results This should run for a very long time, and not cause hangs. * Build Date & Platform This has been tested on the following kernels which all exhibit the same failures: - 3.2.0-24 (Ubuntu Precise) - 3.4.0-rc4 - 3.0.29 - 3.1.10 - 3.2.15 - 3.3.2 * Additional Information This is the related Ubuntu bug with some additional information: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/979498 This is an email thread describing the issue: http://oss.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2012-04/msg00951.html Not sure if the following bug is related or not: http://oss.sgi.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=854 In addition there is an older thread that could also be related: http://oss.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2011-11/msg00401.html -- Configure bugmail: http://oss.sgi.com/bugzilla/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug. The only way we get to the above error message is if ag _size_ is out of bounds; exiting with an error about alignment rather than about size seems odd. Maybe below is too clever, but if by the time we've decided that agsize is out of bounds after rounding it both up and down, as necessary, to get to a stripe-width multiple, calling validate_ag_geometry() will give us the same standard message as if we had specified no stripe geometry: $ mkfs/mkfs.xfs -f -d file,name=fsfile,size=9764864000b,agcount=31,su=512k,sw=20 agsize (314995613b) too big, maximum is 268435455 blocks Usage: mkfs.xfs ... $ mkfs/mkfs.xfs -f -d file,name=fsfile,size=9764864000b,agcount=31 agsize (314995613b) too big, maximum is 268435455 blocks Usage: mkfs.xfs ... We're running 256 nfsd's. We are also running a gluster 3.3beta3 client to a gluster volume over ethernet, but this does not seem to be involved. The gluster fs remains up and active thru this. The ethernet controllers are not reporting any errors with ifconfig, so the hardware seems to be OK. This has happened under CentOS 5.7 and more recently under 5.8 The RAID controller reports everything as OK; xfs_check reports everything as OK. We are running the following (self-reported) versions from CentOS 5.8 mkfs.xfs version 2.9.4 xfs_db version 2.9.4 xfsdump Version 2.2.46 xfsprogs Version 2.9.4 I do not know whether this is an explicit XFS problem but XFS calls are referenced in the stack trace in the dmesg log (see below) As the primary storage node, this node is almost always under heavy load (/proc/loadavg varies from 1-16 due to NFS load). Up until about 5 months ago, everything was running fairly smoothly, but at about that point things started to go wrong sporadically. The problem developed with the load going from a high but acceptable level (~10) increasing over the course of about 10 min to 250-300. The XFS filesystem became unusable from both the host and remotely, but the root filesystem was still available (as was the remote gluster filesystem). local utilities reported that the load was high but reported no visible processes causing it. (top, atop, htop). Network traffic was very low (via iostat, nfswatch, ifstat, iftop, etc). I did not do an extensive tcpdump, but I will try to the next time it happens. The dmesg log (see attachment) over this time included several stack traces that referenced xfs functions, starting at about line 620. Do these imply an XFS or an NFS error and/or can you describe either a fix or other approach that would remedy this? The sudden appearance of such a problem could imply a hardware fault, but the machine reports normal on all variables that I can find. It could also be a problem with a badly behaved application - since it is part of an academic cluster, there are a number of badly written, badly behaved apps running, but typically these reveal themselves pretty easily. -- Configure bugmail: http://oss.sgi.com/bugzilla/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug. This was done to reproduce the issue. Changing the log size to the minimum seemed to produce the backtrace as the original failure. The description here should have part of the backtrace here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/979498 The syslog here should be the backtrace using the reproducer: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/102951054/syslog This has also been reproduced on 3.4-rc4, 3.2.0-24-server (Ubuntu precise), and a few other versions in between. Instead, the disk gets disconnected, > the partition is invalidated, and the invalidate_partition() routine calls > fsync_bdev(). That's in the block layer, not in SCSI or USB. Alan (Stern), don't get you knickers in a knot because someone completely unfamiliar with USB/SCSI error handling paths mischaracterised a massive stack trace full of USB and SCSI functions leading up erroneously into the filesystem sync code. However, given you comment, I'd love to know why Alan (Cox) went and characterised this as a filesystem/XFS bug. I can't reassign it to the block layer because normal bugzilla users can't change the product field. Fixed by commit: commit aff3a9edb7080f69f07fe76a8bd089b3dfa4cb5d Author: Dave Chinner Date: Mon Apr 23 15:58:44 2012 +1000 xfs: Use preallocation for inodes with extsz hints xfstest 229 exposes a problem with buffered IO, delayed allocation and extent size hints. That is when we do delayed allocation during buffered IO, we reserve space for the extent size hint alignment and allocate the physical space to align the extent, but we do not zero the regions of the extent that aren't written by the write(2) syscall. The result is that we expose stale data in unwritten regions of the extent size hints. There are two ways to fix this. The first is to detect that we are doing unaligned writes, check if there is already a mapping or data over the extent size hint range, and if not zero the page cache first before then doing the real write. This can be very expensive for large extent size hints, especially if the subsequent writes fill then entire extent size before the data is written to disk. The second, and simpler way, is simply to turn off delayed allocation when the extent size hint is set and use preallocation instead. This results in unwritten extents being laid down on disk and so only the written portions will be converted. This matches the behaviour for direct IO, and will also work for the real time device. The disadvantage of this approach is that for small extent size hints we can get file fragmentation, but in general extent size hints are fairly large (e.g. stripe width sized) so this isn't a big deal. Implement the second approach as it is simple and effective.
