Today, I wiped the other one (previously NT only) and did a Linux-only install (Red Hat "everything") of the same stuff, except that this machine does not run properly. It boots OK, and presents the SGI-logoed login screen, and even usually allows you to log in, but as soon as the desktop appears and you try to do anything it is usually only seconds before it will lock up with a half drawn window. The mouse still moves, but everything else is dead and unresponsive. Having locked up, the machine can still be logged into from outside, but it appears that the X process is thrashing (99%+ CPU usage). I have tried playing with various different screen modes in XF86Config with the expected results but it still locks in the same manner as with the default "1280x1024@60" setting. The machine, of course, has worked fine for several months under NT, but having wiped it completely for Linux I can't check this again! Any ideas? I am prepared for it to be a hardware problem, but this would be a bummer... I have attached the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file if this is of any use, but it seems fine to me.
