There is, however, a NetBSD port. In any event, with any port, it will probably not have graphics. I have asked around about getting documentation on the O2 graphics and it looks like that is imposible. It just doesn't exist. And to make things worse, with the O2 architecture, apparently if you pass in values to the graphics board in the wrong order (even if they are the correct values), the board can fry itself. The dmedia capabilities of the o2 will be really hard to get working under Linux due to the lack of real time extensions and guaranteed I/O in the kernel -- not to mention lack of documentation for the hardware. The O2 is really a one off product that resembles very little any other SGI architecutre. There is a port to the INDY, Idigo 2, O200 & O2000, but I am doubtful of a good o2 port any time soon. Sorry I could not be of any more help. -tduffy On Thu, 10 Aug 2000, Djamel Medjahed wrote: > Greetings, > > I am interested in a Linux port for the following platform (SGI O2) > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > CPU: MIPS R5000 Processor Chip Revision: 10.0 > FPU: MIPS R5000 Floating Point Coprocessor Revision: 10.0 > 1 300 MHZ IP32 Processor > Main memory size: 256 Mbytes > Secondary unified instruction/data cache size: 1 Mbyte on Processor 0 > Instruction cache size: 32 Kbytes > Data cache size: 32 Kbytes > FLASH PROM version 4.13 > Integral SCSI controller 0: Version ADAPTEC 7880 > Disk drive: unit 1 on SCSI controller 0 > Disk drive: unit 2 on SCSI controller 0 > CDROM: unit 4 on SCSI controller 0 > Integral SCSI controller 1: Version ADAPTEC 7880 > On-board serial ports: tty1 > On-board serial ports: tty2 > On-board EPP/ECP parallel port > CRM graphics installed > Integral Ethernet: ec0, version 1 > Iris Audio Processor: version A3 revision 0 > Video: MVP unit 0 version 1.4 > with no AV Card or Camera. > Vice: TRE > ----------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. > > Sincerely, > > Djamel > From owner-sgilinux@oss.sgi.com Mon Aug 21 01:55:28 2000 Received: by oss.sgi.com id ; Mon, 21 Aug 2000 01:55:18 -0700 Received: from bambu.metla.fi ([128.214.53.7]:35590 "HELO bambu.metla.fi") by oss.sgi.com with SMTP id ; Mon, 21 Aug 2000 01:55:00 -0700 Received: from magnolia.metla.fi (magnolia.metla.fi [128.214.53.44]) by bambu.metla.fi (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id LAA30392 for ; Mon, 21 Aug 2000 11:54:57 +0300 (EET DST) Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 11:59:45 +0300 (EEST) From: Jari Perttunen Reply-To: jari.perttunen@metla.fi To: sgilinux@oss.sgi.com Subject: SGI ProPack 1.3 for Linux (BETA) Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-sgilinux@oss.sgi.com Precedence: bulk Return-Path: X-Orcpt: rfc822;sgilinux-outgoing Encouraged by your wish to send feedback about your SGI ProPack 1.3 for Linux I would like to ask first if it is only meant to work with SGI Linux machines or does it run (or is meant to run) on top of RedHat 6.2 in general? In our installer, (if you run INSTALL), it will handle the clashes for you. The ProPAck is meant to install on top of any system. It has a superset of hardware support in RedHAT. That being said, we have not tested every piece of hardware. For instance, the Buslogic SCSI driver has been reported to be broken in 1.3 (BTW, this is fixed in 1.4 as of the ALPHA). THe 1.3 website is out of date and should be updated. We are no longer in BETA for 1.3 and we released 1.3 over a month ago. In fact, we are in the midst of working on releasing 1.4. Now that we need to upgrade to RH6.2, we need to find a new version of kdb that would work on 2.2.14 kernels. I could see in the kdb downloading page that as far as 2.2 kernels, it only supports 2.2.13 (v0.6) and than jumps straight to 2.3.29 (v1.2). My questions are: 1) is it possible to use v0.6 on kernels other than 2.2.13 ? 2) if not, is there a way (simple ;-) to modify the patch to match a 2.2.14 kernel ? 3) if not, will there be a v0.7 patch for 2.2.14 ? 4) aside from the above, is there an ETA on the ProPack v1.3 ? You must have a Pentium 1 or lower. See, if the installer detects anything less than a PPro, it tries to use the 586 versions of the kernel rpms. Since we don't have any machines that are older than Pentium Pro's, we did not test this. We add in a smp-bigmem kernel which we install if you have > 1G memory. But, even if you don't have this much memory, the installer tries to unslect it and we don't have a 586 or 386 version of the smp-bigmem kernel. The reason we had a smp-bigmem kernel in the first place is because originally, we had Kanoj's bigmem implementation which allowed you to access more of the memory for more general purpose tasks, but caused a ~5% performance hit. In 1.3, we switched to using the community acepted version of bigmem, but kept the 1.1 & 1.2 packaging convention. Since the community bigmem implementation is not as heavy weight (~1% performance hit -- also less general purpose, but alas), we have decided to turn it on by default in the smp kernels (not in the up ones). So, this particular install bug was fixed de facto in 1.4. Sorry for the trouble. The workaround is to copy the iso image to a writable directory and delete the kernel-smp-bigmem package from SGI/base/comps. Thanks for your help. -tduffy On Tue, 22 Aug 2000, Jari Perttunen wrote: > > Hi, > > I don't know if this is any use for you but I tried to > install Linux ProPack 1.3 on my Dell Laptop using INSTALL installer. > Attached in the file ProPackError.txt are the error > messages produced by the INSTALL installer. > > Hardware: Dell Latitude XPi CD > Operating System: RedHat Linux 6.2 (KDE desktop) > > Commands used: > > (Download ProPack1.3.iso from SGI download area) > root# mount -t iso9660 -o loop ProPack1.3.iso propack > root# cd propack > propack# ./INSTALL > > I can select the Language but the installation then > fails right after that. > > Yours, > > > ============================== > Jari Perttunen > Metla > email: jari.perttunen@metla.fi > tel: +358-9-85705362 > fax: +358-9-85705361 > ============================== > > On Mon, 21 Aug 2000, Thomas Duffy wrote: > > > There are some clashes and this is natural. The "Beta" is actually the released one (if you go to the download link). The 1.x series of kdb has been rearchitected to work on multiple platforms including x86, alpha, mips64, and ia64. AFAIK, there has not been a backport to the 2.2.x kernels. That being said, we have been pushing the 0.6 forward to later 2.2.x kernels. 1.3 contains 0.6 for the 2.2.15 kernel and 1.4 has it for the 2.2.16 kernel. You should be able to apply the patch without too much trouble to any 2.2.x tree. If you wait til I put 1.4 on the web page, then you can grab the kernel.src.rpm and unpack it to find the kdb patch. In 1.4, we have redone the way we build the kernels. Before 1.4, we had the base kernel tar ball and a monolithic patch of all of SGI's contributions to the kernel. In 1.4, we have moved more towards what RedHat, SuSE, and all the other major vendors do -- maintain *many* different patches against a base tarball. This makes maintenance much easier. In any event, you have two options: - grab the debug kernel off of the 1.3 CD which already has kdb built into it - take the kdb patch off of oss and apply it to a newer kernel and resolve the conflicts by hand. I deleted the kernel-smp-bigmem package from SGI/base/comps. And the SGI kernel installs properly. At least after rebooting such message appears before "xdm" takes over the login process. Now, the next phase is (if possible) to enhance the Laptop to support OpenGL development. By selecting individual packages the libraries needed can/could be installed but my question is (for which I could not find the answer from the manuals) if the various X-servers provided support OpenGL protocol (naturally the hardware support may not exist)? And according to "SGI/base/comps" the libraries seem to belong to 230 Graphics. >From the rpm-packages I found XFree86-NeoMagick-4.0-0.8.i386.rpm. This should be the right one because the graphics chip in the Laptop is Neomagic MagicGraph 128ZV (rev 2) (see also attachment file produced by hinv from ProPack). The installation of the X-server fails (the selected packages were XFree86-NeoMagick-4.0-0.8.i386.rpm. together with packages it depends on denoted by Package Dependencies screen) (see attached error file). Maybe I'm now trying to do something that simply is not possible? Maybe I should try to compile the OpenGL sample implementation instead? Or try to build GLX with existing Xserver (XFree86-3.3) from http://www.sgi.com/software/opensource/glx? Or simply use Mesa instead? Several file systems are exported no_root_squash to a few trusted machines (all linux) in a cluster. With nfsV2, nfsd responded to a request according to the file/directory permissions, and according to the euid/egid of the requesting process. For example, ftpd runs with ruid=0, and with euid=. When ftpd wanted to access a file in an nfs-mounted volume, the request was processed by nfsd according to ftpd euid/egid. I have upgraded to an SGI kernel with nfsV3. And I was horrified in discovering a few days later that nfsd responded to ftpd requests according to ftpd ruid/rgid. This means that a user making an ftp to an nfs-mounted volume can get files with root privileges !!! If the mounted filesystem is /home, any user can ftp ~/.ssh/identity ... If I export root_squash, things go back in order and the system security is maintained. But I can no longer perform root operations on the nfs mounted volumes, which is not comfortable for the cluster management. I have performed several other tests : - compare kernel 2.2.15-3SGI_32 and 2.2.15-3SGI_13 : same behaviour. - compare 2.2.15-3SGI_32 and HJ Lu's 2.2.16-8.ext3.4 : same behaviour. 2.2.15-3SGI_32 behaves safely if I mount -o vers=2 and export no_root_squash. The problem is clearly related to nfsV3. Now my question : is it in the nfsV3 spec, or is it a bug in the implementation ? or something I have not understood ? thanks for your help. -- *********************** Jean-Louis Monge tel. The OpenGL implementation on the 1.3 CD is for the 230 only. The RPMS are from RedHat and they do not install cleanly on a XFree 3.3.6 system. If you have a look in the INSTALL script, we do a bunch of things like delete your old XFree, move some directories around, etc. to get XFree 4.0 packages to install properly. You should emulate this. > Maybe I'm now trying to do something that simply is not possible? > Maybe I should try to compile the OpenGL sample implementation instead? > Or try to build GLX with existing Xserver (XFree86-3.3) > from http://www.sgi.com/software/opensource/glx? > Or simply use Mesa instead? I do not know about the SI vs. Mesa except that the SI is complete where Mesa is lacking in a few areas (Mesa was written with primary goal to support Quake as opposed to being OpenGL 1.2 compliant which it is not). And I also am not sure what the 3D support is on the NeoMagic chipset. My guess is none. And even if there were, I am pretty sure that Utah GLX (the only community based GLX support) does not work with this. So if you use Mesa or the OpenGL SI, you will doing so without hardware acceleration. I have cc'd some guys from the OpenGL team who may better answer your question. I assume by the question that it is some sort of IRIX tape backup (maybe robot) management software. If this is the case, I have not heard any official word nor rumors about such software being ported. But if you have a need for it, you are welcome to send your request through your sales rep. Its primary purpose is to manage the capacity of online disk resources by moving file data from disk to offline media. Because the high I/O bandwidth of Silicon Graphics systems can overrun online disk resources, capacity scheduling, in the form of native file system migration, DMF can help you manage the storage resources of your Silicon Graphics systems. In addition to ensuring that adequate disk space is always available, capacity scheduling allows you to maintain a data space that is larger than your online disk resource. Oversubscription requires that the value of stored data be recognized as the same or higher than that of online data; DMF provides this capability. I assume by the question that it is some sort of IRIX tape backup (maybe robot) management software. If this is the case, I have not heard any official word nor rumors about such software being ported. But if you have a need for it, you are welcome to send your request through your sales rep. I can also ask around about plans here within engineering.
