I started hacking out a FAQ, realized that this most likely was somewhere on oss.sgi.com, found the link on the PP 1.3 page and discovered that it was dead. And so was several of the other FAQ links on oss.sgi.com. I did find the 1.2 FAQ. A good FAQ is worth a project on its own. Someone should have the task of creating the tools for generating a good, extendable, maintainable, updated FAQ. Is such a project underway? *REALLY?* In the mean time, I'll try to cough up some questions and provide decent answers.... It fails to run, reporting that the installation is "not supported on a Visual Workstation". It appears that the part of the script which checks for magic values in the PCI /dev structure does not find the answers it expects on our machine. I modified the script to bypass this test (plus the nested "if" immediately following) and the script ran correctly. The machine was previously running an "everything" installation of RedHat 6.2, although I had initially believed the message produced by the ProPack script and sought an alternative solution to the graphics installation, namely a manual install of XFree86-4.0 plus matching Kernel and GLX drivers from nVidia's website. What does this mean...? :) Simon PS. You might also want to put in a warning that the "makewhatis" stage will take a long time. I put this into the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit on my machine. but please remember that this is unsupported and the support people will not help you if you call them. also, they will probably yell at me for telling you how to do this :) hope this all helps, -tduffy On Tue, 4 Jul 2000, Simon Eves wrote: > Dear OSS, > > I have come across a problem with the INSTALL script of ProPack 1.3 when > attempting to install it on our new 230. I've got 2 questions regarding: cobalt driver: I've been experimenting quite unexpected troubles with sgi cobalt graphic adapter driver (sgi visual station 320) following an upgrade to Windows 2000 professional+sgi ssk, and I would like to know if installing linux+sgi propack 1.2 is going to solve that one. performance: It seems W2k doesn't detect the full amount of ram I've got. First it substracts the memory pre-allocated for sgi graphics system, and goes even further: 512 physical ram equals 339 available ram for the OS. I guess that makes for some performance loss there. Does Linux detect ram memory better? Does it better understand SGI graphics system? Thanks for your time! I have not seen any problems with linux detecting the wrong size of RAM. unless you are interested in helping with the porting effort or feel like living on the edge, I would suggest sticking with windows on the 320 & 540. not to mention, support will not want any thing to do with you if you switch to linux. later, -tduffy From owner-sgilinux@oss.sgi.com Thu Jul 13 08:52:16 2000 Received: by oss.sgi.com id ; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 08:52:06 -0700 Received: from learn.senecac.on.ca ([142.204.1.21]:35828 "EHLO learn.senecac.on.ca") by oss.sgi.com with ESMTP id ; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 08:51:57 -0700 Received: from learn.senecac.on.ca ([142.204.222.13]) by learn.senecac.on.ca (Netscape Messaging Server 3.6) with ESMTP id AAA3519 for ; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 11:52:00 -0400 Message-ID: <396DF22E.A03BD12@learn.senecac.on.ca> Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 11:45:34 -0500 From: "Laiq Ahmed" Organization: Seneca College X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en]C-CCK-MCD (WinNT; I) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: sgilinux@oss.sgi.com Subject: sgi propack 1.2 for linux Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-sgilinux@oss.sgi.com Precedence: bulk Return-Path: X-Orcpt: rfc822;sgilinux-outgoing hi there im looking for somthing more toward the benifits of propack 1.2 are and what good does it do ive read the material on your site but nothing goes in depth of the matter about the benifits of this product can u please redirect me to a link or mail back some in depth info for this project THANK YOU From owner-sgilinux@oss.sgi.com Thu Jul 13 09:30:36 2000 Received: by oss.sgi.com id ; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 09:30:27 -0700 Received: from deliverator.sgi.com ([204.94.214.10]:42549 "EHLO deliverator.sgi.com") by oss.sgi.com with ESMTP id ; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 09:30:05 -0700 Received: from nodin.corp.sgi.com (nodin.corp.sgi.com [192.26.51.193]) by deliverator.sgi.com (980309.SGI.8.8.8-aspam-6.2/980310.SGI-aspam) via ESMTP id JAA17909 for ; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 09:22:44 -0700 (PDT) mail_from (tduffy@dbear.engr.sgi.com) Received: from cthulhu.engr.sgi.com (cthulhu.engr.sgi.com [192.26.80.2]) by nodin.corp.sgi.com (980427.SGI.8.8.8/980728.SGI.AUTOCF) via ESMTP id JAA21577 for ; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 09:29:42 -0700 (PDT) Received: from dbear.engr.sgi.com (dbear.engr.sgi.com [163.154.18.85]) by cthulhu.engr.sgi.com (980427.SGI.8.8.8/970903.SGI.AUTOCF) via ESMTP id JAA13874; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 09:28:10 -0700 (PDT) mail_from (tduffy@dbear.engr.sgi.com) Received: from localhost (tduffy@localhost) by dbear.engr.sgi.com (8.9.3/8.8.7) with ESMTP id JAA31625; Thu, 13 Jul 2000 09:27:18 -0700 Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 09:27:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Thomas Duffy To: Laiq Ahmed cc: sgilinux@oss.sgi.com Subject: Re: sgi propack 1.2 for linux In-Reply-To: <396DF22E.A03BD12@learn.senecac.on.ca> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-sgilinux@oss.sgi.com Precedence: bulk Return-Path: X-Orcpt: rfc822;sgilinux-outgoing I am not a marketing person, nor is oss a marketing site.
