I've set up a channel bridge from slack to irc in the event folks want
to stick to irc, and not risk missing relevant conversation on slack.
Currently there are mappings in 'pcpbot' for;
slack irc.freenode.net
#general #pcp
#ci #pcp-ci
#parfait #parfait
#gsoc-golang #pcp-go
I'd be happy to add more as needed, just let me know on or off list.

The effect of this patch is to disable the pmmgr service, even if a
user deliberately installs the pcp-manager package. Perhaps one
should infer that if the user goes to the trouble of installing it,
she'd actually like to use it. Perhaps the cron-based pmlogger should
be disabled instead in such a case.
If the cron-based pmlogger init-scripts were separated into a separate
subpackage instead of bundled into the main pcp one, a user could even
more clearly express a preference.

qa: fix a cut+paste error in test 1024 data
One of the procfs files used to inject testing data into
pmdalinux for block metric testing had a cut+paste error!
Turns out that on big endian platforms, this induces some
indeterminism in the output which doesn't exist otherwise
and the test fails.
Since the kernel will never produce dodgey data of that
nature, not worth defending against in pmdalinux - simply
fix the sample data.

qa: rework python-not-configured checks for tests
Found several tests with python dependencies that we were
not checking for common.python with the original scheme.
Now, we unconditionally include common.python (instead of
compile-time conditional) so tests can always use it (and
are simpler as a result), and use the _notrun check there
for PCP_PYTHON_PROG as the main test guard.

qa: resolve pmwebd -I-induced regression in test qa/661
Seeing pmwebd test 661 failure on all Red Hat QE hosts, git
bisect finds it to be a regression from e9262b89b0fe where
a -I was added into pmwebd test options. This changes the
way the -A option is handled, and is causing the two metric
regex parts of the test to no longer match on their archive
name components, so curl ends up producing no output.
While in there, also fix a small race where pid might not be
set by the time _cleanup is called, causing kill invocation
on an empty $pid.

Makepkgs: fix TAR setting
There had been some regression here, I suspect because depending on
the optional pieces being built, a valid setting for $TAR may or may
not be optional, because I was seeing:
./Makepkgs: 533: ./Makepkgs: -zxf: not found
'cause $TAR was undefined.
First round of changes here are to do a better job in gnu_tools()
of finding a gnu-style command (this is used to set $TAR).
May be some subsequent changes to actually fix the broken logic in
Makepkgs in the event that $TAR remains undefined and we try to use
this is the name of an executable gnu-style tar.

packaging for OpenMandriva
This used to work a long time ago, but had not been tested for ages.
These changes get part of the way there, especially dealing with RPM
spec file differences and the package checks in check-vm, but more
needs to be done, especially since rpmlint is run by default here and
there are a boatload of rpmlint errors reported (many of which appear
to be rpmlint problems, but some are probably generic issues with the
PCP rpms on all platforms) ... I've deferred this investigation
for another day.
Also refactoring of check-vm to greatly improve the performance in the
inner loop by not repeatedly checking for (and failing as expected)
the packaging tools that are not installed on the current platform.

Hej,
pГҐ din deklaration.

Each allocation sites identified is for an object whose
lifetime is associated with a stack frame and cannot leak.
For valgrind to report this way is more likely to be a
valgrind bug or some weird side-effect of shutdown due
to a external kill -9 (?) from the test case driver.
Resolves Red Hat BZ #1343319.

Hi,
In the past I have mainly used the performance monitoring events provided by the CPU's performance monitoring units. It is not uncommon for particular events monitored by the hardware to be inaccurate (for example BT243 Performance Monitor counters May Produce Incorrect Results in the Intel Xeon Processor E5 Family Spec Update. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/xeon/xeon-e5-family-spec-update.html). The hardware may over count or undercount, or in some cases not count events at all. Thus, blindly trusting the metrics provided by the performance hardware is unwise. When I started using some of of the performance metric provided by PCP I had the same question. How, are the PCP metrics checked to see if they are accurate/reasonable? For some of the PAPI (http://icl.cs.utk.edu/papi/) testsuite there are cross checks to see that values agree with the expected values.
For estimating network utilization using PCP the network.interface.baudrate and network.interface.speed metrics should provide some indication of the interface speed. However, looking at the numbers produced by pmval below they don't seem to be reasonable for 1Gbps ethernet connection of em1.
[wcohen@santana Downloads]$ pmval network.interface.baudrate
metric: network.interface.baudrate
host: santana
semantics: discrete instantaneous value
units: byte / sec
samples: all
wlp3s0 lo virbr0-nic virbr0 em1
? ? 316871376 ? 1622366528
? ? 316871376 ? 1622366528
^C
[wcohen@santana Downloads]$ pmval network.interface.speed
metric: network.interface.speed
host: santana
semantics: discrete instantaneous value
units: Mbyte / sec
samples: all
wlp3s0 lo virbr0-nic virbr0 em1
? ? 7.813E+04 ? 7.813E+06
? ? 7.813E+04 ? 7.813E+06
^C
Are there some PCP tests that check that some of the metrics are sane and reasonable?

I now had a bit of time to check it and it's nice work indeed.
However, one minor question:
The pcp-ipcs(1) man page lists quite a few options which are not
supported (and not shown in pcp ipcs --help output) as it is almost a
1:1 copy of the ipcs(1) man page, would it make sense to list all the
unsupported options under the CONFORMING TO section? For some reason
some are listed already (like -a and -b) but not all (e.g., -s and -q).
Thanks,

Hi,
The patch below adds rudimentary support for pcp :
$ pcp atop
atop free lvmcache shping verify
collectl iostat numastat summary
dmcache ipcs python uptime
$ pcp ipcs
--help --summary -? -l
--limits --version -V -u
Few unrelated cosmetic changes and drops one unneeded TODO item.
The remaining TODOs are somewhat obscure and I'm not planning to

Oh dear, looks like I just got caught photoshopping a screenshot..
Here's a properly photos^W^W more realistic one:
$ pcp
atop free lvmcache shping verify
collectl iostat numastat summary
dmcache ipcs python uptime
$ pcp ipcs
--help --summary -? -l
--limits --version -V -u

Nathan,
The control.local one was the real killer that lead to all my qa directory being donated to the user pcp on vm04.
Of course if the pmie_check changes had been identified and made earlier, then the damage would not have happened ... 8^)
Getting rid of the recursive chown is a good thing ... I'll go look at the pmlogger_check case now and see if I can expunge it there as well.

Author: Ken McDonell
Date: Fri Jun 10 08:57:55 2016 +1000
src/pmie/pmie_check.sh: extra hardening
Greatly improved the error checking of the control file in the
wake of the great qa/115 disaster.
Also expunged the chown -R that is dangerous in the extreme ...
I don't think this is necessary at all once the directory containing
the log file and the log file itself (if it exists) are accounted for
with explicit chown actions.
commit b3a3b11ba2fb1a21aaa0d5b14034727f2d1f5d03
Author: Ken McDonell
Date: Fri Jun 10 08:39:50 2016 +1000
src/pmie/control.local: add explicit $version
This file is v1.1 format, but the missing $version line meant
it was interpreted as v1.0 format (former default) with one
less field expected ... all hell broke lose as a result.

Good idea.

src/pmie/pmie_check.sh: extra hardening
Greatly improved the error checking of the control file in the
wake of the great qa/115 disaster.
Also expunged the chown -R that is dangerous in the extreme ...
I don't think this is necessary at all once the directory containing
the log file and the log file itself (if it exists) are accounted for
with explicit chown actions.

src/pmie/control.local: add explicit $version
This file is v1.1 format, but the missing $version line meant
it was interpreted as v1.0 format (former default) with one
less field expected ... all hell broke lose as a result.

Great - thanks Ken! The pmlogger and pmie script contents are now closer to
each other with the recent version bump, and I'm pretty sure the recursive
chown in pmlogger_check should be receptive to the same treatment.

Hi Will,

It depends - various strategies exist depending on the PMDA and the nature of
the values being extracted, and the mechanisms involves. There's some examples
over in qa/{778,835,876,987,1113} ... just a small subset to give a taste.
> For estimating network utilization using PCP the network.interface.baudrate

There's a couple of ways interface speed is extracted - ioctl and sysfs; depends
on kernel version. The code is over in src/pmdas/linux/proc_net_dev.c - see the
REFRESH_NET_SPEED references there. The code is dependent on the kernel/drivers
giving good values - and there's also issues like pcp commit 9b616ace2284b622 to
factor in from out of left field.
That said there could certainly be a PCP bug or two lurking here also. Best way
to step through exactly what's happening here is:
$ gdb --args /usr/bin/pminfo -L -K clear -K add,60,`pwd`/src/pmdas/linux/pmda_linux network.interface.speed
... then set breakpoints in places like refresh_net_dev_ioctl, then "r" in gdb.
cheers.

I don't think there is much we can do on the fly, but the PCP QA
testsuite contains many examples where we try to validate the values,
either:
(a) by comparing with an independent tool, e.g. sar or netstat, or
(b) by generating synthetic loads and comparing the reported results
against the expected.
But the coverage is weak. Not many independent tools exist for (a) and
experiments of the style of (b) are notoriously (and conceptually) hard
to engineer in ways that make them statistically robust across the many
different platforms where PCP QA is run.

Agreed.
These sort of errors arise from one or more of the following factors:
1. the channels we use to get the raw data are typically not versioned
and outside any ABI guarantees, so even if the data was once correct, it
may no longer be so
2. algorithmic errors in the PMDA, e.g. picking the wrong field from a
struct or parsing ascii incorrectly
3. metadata errors, e.g. the numbers are really bytes, but the PMDA
reports them as Mbytes
4. arithmetic overflow, especially when converting from the raw units to
the PCP units to match the PCP metadata
I don't think we can make these factors go away, so catching bogus data
in QA is the best plan.
So, any assistance in improving the QA coverage of any metrics to
improve the validation would be most appreciated.

collectl2pcp - refine proc indom external names, add support for additional metrics
This updates collectl2pcp so the proc indom external instance names match

pmdammv, qa: hardening mmap file data handling
Numerous updates to pmdammv to make sure it cannot be coerced
into accessing memory outside of the memory mapped files that
it loads. In addition, sensible (but still large) limits are
placed on the data structures that are allocated to hold data
representing various parts of the mappings.
The mmvdump utility is updated in a similar way to improve its
resilience in the presence of bad mappings. It also has some
slight output refinements (symbolic flag printing, etc).
This tackles SGI BZ 1062.

Hi Nathan,
Thanks for the pointers to existing tests. I am glad to hear that there are some sanity checks in the pcp qa testsuite. I understand that not every metric can be sanity checked, but having a larger set of them be correct will make it less likely for people to be mislead by bogus values.
I will take a closer look at why I am getting the odd values for network.interface.speed and network.interface.baudrate.
