The sizes and signedness of the sprintf format and several of the fields of the per-device structure did not match the kernel, and did not cater for differences between 32 and 64 bit longs. Initially observed as disk read/write_bytes and blkread/write on one of our product NAS servers not being updated - this turned out to be due to using signed vs unsigned integers in a sprintf. The fix was verified on the same machine: ~$ pminfo -f disk.dev.blkread disk.dev.blkread inst [3 or "sdc"] value 2147483647 ~$ gdb -q (gdb) p /x 2147483647 $1 = 0x7fffffff ~$ pminfo -f disk.dev.blkread disk.dev.blkread inst [3 or "sdc"] value 3247668682 $ gdb -q (gdb) p /x 3247668682 $1 = 0xc1937dca From nscott@aconex.com Thu Feb 7 18:54:16 2008 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list pcp); Thu, 07 Feb 2008 18:54:24 -0800 (PST) Received: from cuda.sgi.com (cuda1.sgi.com [192.48.168.28]) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.11.20060308/8.12.11/SuSE Linux 0.7) with ESMTP id m182sFi1023804 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 18:54:16 -0800 X-ASG-Debug-ID: 1202439261-67df015d0000-S8gJnT X-Barracuda-URL: http://cuda.sgi.com:80/cgi-bin/mark.cgi Received: from postoffice.aconex.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by cuda.sgi.com (Spam Firewall) with ESMTP id 92A89DBB22A for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 18:54:22 -0800 (PST) Received: from postoffice.aconex.com (prod.aconex.com [203.89.192.138]) by cuda.sgi.com with ESMTP id e403YKSly0Uqt1fT for ; Thu, 07 Feb 2008 18:54:22 -0800 (PST) Received: from edge.scott.net.au (unknown [203.89.192.141]) by postoffice.aconex.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 108C592C30F for ; Fri, 8 Feb 2008 13:53:47 +1100 (EST) X-ASG-Orig-Subj: pcp updates Subject: pcp updates From: Nathan Scott Reply-To: nscott@aconex.com To: pcp@oss.sgi.com Content-Type: text/plain Organization: Aconex Date: Fri, 08 Feb 2008 13:53:46 +1100 Message-Id: <1202439226.9463.606.camel@edge.scott.net.au> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.6.3 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Barracuda-Connect: prod.aconex.com[203.89.192.138] X-Barracuda-Start-Time: 1202439275 X-Barracuda-Bayes: INNOCENT GLOBAL 0.0000 1.0000 -2.0210 X-Barracuda-Virus-Scanned: by cuda.sgi.com at sgi.com X-Barracuda-Spam-Score: -1.52 X-Barracuda-Spam-Status: No, SCORE=-1.52 using per-user scores of TAG_LEVEL=2.0 QUARANTINE_LEVEL=1000.0 KILL_LEVEL=3.0 tests=BSF_RULE7568M X-Barracuda-Spam-Report: Code version 3.1, rules version 3.1.41661 Rule breakdown below pts rule name description ---- ---------------------- -------------------------------------------------- 0.50 BSF_RULE7568M Custom Rule 7568M X-archive-position: 1469 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: pcp-bounce@oss.sgi.com Errors-to: pcp-bounce@oss.sgi.com X-original-sender: nscott@aconex.com Precedence: bulk X-list: pcp Changes committed to git://oss.sgi.com:8090/nathans/pcp.git VERSION.pcp | 2 +- src/pminfo/GNUmakefile | 2 +- src/pmlogsummary/pmlogsummary.c | 4 ++++ src/pmprobe/GNUmakefile | 2 +- 4 files changed, 7 insertions(+), 3 deletions(-) commit 723f97eba84b62c8bc422c97a9fbfb82e8166a57 Author: Nathan Scott Date: Fri Feb 8 12:16:06 2008 +1100 Bump build version number to todays date. commit a294aff0964e893a82caa9133fe031e73563d5d7 Author: Nathan Scott Date: Fri Feb 8 12:15:33 2008 +1100 There's a problem when pmlogsummary encounters float/double values which have the value NaN, when these values occur only once or twice in the archive. As soon as these values are included into the averages, all subsequent arithmetic on the average returns NaN as well (of course). Ultimately, this means we do not get meaningful data for an entire archive. Since there's no situation that incorporating a not-a-number value into an average makes sense, we can safely ignore the records which contain such, and still produce a valid result from pmlogsummary. commit f4471e92a776f18fa2c0beea86721a0dae0815cf Author: Nathan Scott Date: Fri Feb 8 12:11:14 2008 +1100 Fix Makefile flags for local context builds in pminfo and pmprobe. The current version at: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/pcp/ ...is a bit outdated with the current SGI theme, as used on the XFS pages and the top level pages (and www.sgi.com for that matter). The new version is at: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/newpcp/ I've also created a git tree to track all changes, its alongside my other git tree's on oss.sgi.com. Lemme know if you see any issues viewing the updated pages, please. I'll try to start renovating / improving the content as time permits, if this looks OK so far. If someone @SGI could get the contents of the old HTML tutorial into my hands (http://oss.sgi.com/projects/pcp/contribute.html refers to this) I could also get that updated and online, someday, hopefully. cheers. -- Nathan From nscott@aconex.com Thu Feb 7 19:54:27 2008 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list pcp); Thu, 07 Feb 2008 19:54:32 -0800 (PST) Received: from cuda.sgi.com (cuda2.sgi.com [192.48.168.29]) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.11.20060308/8.12.11/SuSE Linux 0.7) with ESMTP id m183sNOv028103 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 19:54:27 -0800 X-ASG-Debug-ID: 1202442882-3b8300ba0000-S8gJnT X-Barracuda-URL: http://cuda.sgi.com:80/cgi-bin/mark.cgi Received: from postoffice.aconex.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by cuda.sgi.com (Spam Firewall) with ESMTP id 69CA95B2F66 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2008 19:54:42 -0800 (PST) Received: from postoffice.aconex.com (prod.aconex.com [203.89.192.138]) by cuda.sgi.com with ESMTP id BtRxtnL4giEkVFex for ; Thu, 07 Feb 2008 19:54:42 -0800 (PST) Received: from edge.scott.net.au (unknown [203.89.192.141]) by postoffice.aconex.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD7CA92C30F for ; Fri, 8 Feb 2008 14:54:41 +1100 (EST) X-ASG-Orig-Subj: pcpweb updates Subject: pcpweb updates From: Nathan Scott Reply-To: nscott@aconex.com To: pcp@oss.sgi.com Content-Type: text/plain Organization: Aconex Date: Fri, 08 Feb 2008 14:54:41 +1100 Message-Id: <1202442881.9463.620.camel@edge.scott.net.au> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.6.3 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Barracuda-Connect: prod.aconex.com[203.89.192.138] X-Barracuda-Start-Time: 1202442886 X-Barracuda-Bayes: INNOCENT GLOBAL 0.0000 1.0000 -2.0210 X-Barracuda-Virus-Scanned: by cuda.sgi.com at sgi.com X-Barracuda-Spam-Score: -1.52 X-Barracuda-Spam-Status: No, SCORE=-1.52 using per-user scores of TAG_LEVEL=2.0 QUARANTINE_LEVEL=1000.0 KILL_LEVEL=3.0 tests=BSF_RULE7568M X-Barracuda-Spam-Report: Code version 3.1, rules version 3.1.41666 Rule breakdown below pts rule name description ---- ---------------------- -------------------------------------------------- 0.50 BSF_RULE7568M Custom Rule 7568M X-archive-position: 1472 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: pcp-bounce@oss.sgi.com Errors-to: pcp-bounce@oss.sgi.com X-original-sender: nscott@aconex.com Precedence: bulk X-list: pcp Changes committed to git://oss.sgi.com:8090/nathans/pcpweb.git documentation.html | 99 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ features.html | 131 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ index.html | 156 ++----------------------------------------- news.html | 191 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++--------------------------- sidenav.html | 12 +++ 5 files changed, 345 insertions(+), 244 deletions(-) commit ad28485b0c14fdf0e946f02f60ce366a40506745 Author: Nathan Scott Date: Fri Feb 8 14:21:27 2008 +1100 Fix download link to ftp area. commit cff3b34918497e279582642b1ab185b4a36a32cf Author: Nathan Scott Date: Wed Feb 6 21:27:10 2008 +1100 Split up the busy initial page into separate overview/features/documentation pages. commit d848e6516662374c3b96278583e614e9c9d2b739 Author: Nathan Scott Date: Wed Feb 6 20:50:34 2008 +1100 Add pdf downloads and improve news page formatting. commit d5a3428f795c0be85c9244f344987a46c320cb83 Author: Nathan Scott Date: Wed Feb 6 20:13:39 2008 +1100 Initial checkin of PCP web pages converted to the SGI-purple theme. I've put the fix into my pcp git tree, you can pull it out of there if you like: http://oss.sgi.com/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=nathans/kmchart.git;a=shortlog If you're still using pmie, please let me know if it resolves the issue for you too - thanks! cheers. -- Nathan From nscott@aconex.com Tue Feb 12 17:17:33 2008 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list pcp); Tue, 12 Feb 2008 17:17:39 -0800 (PST) Received: from cuda.sgi.com (cuda1.sgi.com [192.48.168.28]) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.11.20060308/8.12.11/SuSE Linux 0.7) with ESMTP id m1D1HV0a011406 for ; Tue, 12 Feb 2008 17:17:33 -0800 X-ASG-Debug-ID: 1202865475-695100390000-S8gJnT X-Barracuda-URL: http://cuda.sgi.com:80/cgi-bin/mark.cgi Received: from postoffice.aconex.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by cuda.sgi.com (Spam Firewall) with ESMTP id 20F8BDFA7E4 for ; Tue, 12 Feb 2008 17:17:55 -0800 (PST) Received: from postoffice.aconex.com (prod.aconex.com [203.89.192.138]) by cuda.sgi.com with ESMTP id hfNlChWJl9bzjY7W for ; Tue, 12 Feb 2008 17:17:55 -0800 (PST) Received: from edge.scott.net.au (unknown [203.89.192.141]) by postoffice.aconex.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0861B92D8E5 for ; Wed, 13 Feb 2008 11:23:55 +1100 (EST) X-ASG-Orig-Subj: pcp updates Subject: pcp updates From: Nathan Scott Reply-To: nscott@aconex.com To: pcp@oss.sgi.com Content-Type: text/plain Organization: Aconex Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2008 11:23:34 +1100 Message-Id: <1202862214.19218.34.camel@edge.scott.net.au> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.6.3 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Barracuda-Connect: prod.aconex.com[203.89.192.138] X-Barracuda-Start-Time: 1202865476 X-Barracuda-Bayes: INNOCENT GLOBAL 0.0000 1.0000 -2.0210 X-Barracuda-Virus-Scanned: by cuda.sgi.com at sgi.com X-Barracuda-Spam-Score: -1.52 X-Barracuda-Spam-Status: No, SCORE=-1.52 using per-user scores of TAG_LEVEL=2.0 QUARANTINE_LEVEL=1000.0 KILL_LEVEL=3.0 tests=BSF_RULE7568M X-Barracuda-Spam-Report: Code version 3.1, rules version 3.1.42093 Rule breakdown below pts rule name description ---- ---------------------- -------------------------------------------------- 0.50 BSF_RULE7568M Custom Rule 7568M X-archive-position: 1477 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: pcp-bounce@oss.sgi.com Errors-to: pcp-bounce@oss.sgi.com X-original-sender: nscott@aconex.com Precedence: bulk X-list: pcp Changes committed to git://oss.sgi.com:8090/nathans/pcp.git VERSION.pcp | 2 +- build/rpm/pcp.spec.in | 2 +- man/man1/autofsd-probe.1 | 3 --- man/man1/telnet-probe.1 | 3 --- man/man4/pmns.4 | 1 + src/pmie/pmie_check.sh | 9 +++++---- 6 files changed, 8 insertions(+), 12 deletions(-) commit 84a6abea73f35890f273e13931f3f4d29a50e74e Author: Nathan Scott Date: Wed Feb 13 11:14:05 2008 +1100 Bump build version number. commit 324b9a72ceb559500c3af85bdc0d1cddea13d7b8 Author: Nathan Scott Date: Wed Feb 13 11:11:56 2008 +1100 Fix a problem where multiple pmie processes could be incorrectly launched for the same host, by pmie_check.sh. A running pmie with a log filename matching the control file entry uniquely identifies that entry. Adding default-hostname matching into this equation (as well) is unnecessary and turns out it can introduce a spurious problem when hostname aliases are being used. In particular, if the pmhostname(1) call to gethostbyname(2) fails, then the given hostname argument is printed out rather than the name returned from gethostbyname. This means pmhostname can return different answers depending on the DNS state at the time, which in turn can cause pmie_check to miss matching on a running pmie, and incorrectly start a duplicate. This was observed in our production environment and the fix has been running there for a few days without the problem recurring (previously it happened once or twice a day in some locations). commit 18de14b6bdbe18deedceae65c965843801693b46 Author: Nathan Scott Date: Wed Feb 13 10:52:51 2008 +1100 Add pmns man page reference to cpp, remove refs to non-pcp pmda from probe man pages. commit 43a036f6af015be9a76329831fb842d74194e66b Author: Nathan Scott Date: Fri Feb 8 16:11:59 2008 +1100 Add pcp runtime dependency on cpp, needed for namespace rebuilding. I'm using CNAME in my pmie "control"-file for most of the hosts I'm monitoring, so it sounds like you've nailed it :-) I downloaded your pmie_check.sh, and replaced it on my monitor host running pcp-2.7.1-1. In particular: - Build static library versions for all the libraries. This is required for the Debian "development" packages, of which we will need several in PCP (three at the minimum, so far). - Do not install shared libraries for several libraries anymore. In particular, the http and PMC libraries have only one user each. While PMC is a general-purpose API, its not standard C++ code, and generates oodles of warnings atm (and noone has really stepped up to fix up and maintain this version of the library). We create a static version now though (and pmdumptext links with that) though we do not install that static lib. This is part of the Debian package build process, as we clamp down on the shared libraries (separate packages) that we ship currently. Once these packages are part of the Debian archives, changing them becomes increasingly difficult - hence these steps to trim down the ones we do ship now. commit dcda45cb2579198d11b10949665499690128e59f Author: Nathan Scott Date: Tue Feb 19 17:32:55 2008 +1100 Update libkmtime - for now, we make this a statically-built library only (only one user, and I may want to extend this API a bit more yet to simplify state management in client tools; plus no man pages). This is part of the Debian package build process, as we clamp down on the shared libraries (separate packages) that we ship currently. Some files had an incorrect copyright, fixed that up here too. commit 85b96ddef401659fe46172d547848016e4463c4a Author: Nathan Scott Date: Tue Feb 19 17:27:42 2008 +1100 Remove some empty historical directories from the open source PCP build. commit 048af357be0ffd5bede456d832e6059b9287ef90 Author: Nathan Scott Date: Tue Feb 19 17:21:31 2008 +1100 On Debian x86_64 systems, we must use /usr/lib as default lib install target. The pid appears in the instance domain, but the metrics other than pid and psargs have no value. ... but i cant see how you would be getting a zero pid, unless you have a file matching /proc/0*[^0-9].* or /proc/.*/task/0*[^0-9].* ..which seems pretty unlikely! Move each of the existing Perl APIs out into their rightful PMDA directories. Fix Makefile dependencies on the Perl module code. Rework the Perl/C interface significantly, in particular allowing for pipes, sockets, and file (tail -f style) descriptors to provide data in a PMDA main loop. Simplify some of the Perl interfaces, extend others to allow all metric/indom meta- data to be passed (names, short and long help text). Install the probes.stp sample probes for the SystemTap PMDA. commit 9971fa2048d99603d73f19c37fde4ac244dfad3f Author: Nathan Scott Date: Fri Feb 22 21:37:32 2008 +1100 Simple database response time measurement PMDA. The dbprobe.pl script should be configured to use the type of DBI appropriate for your database, which includes: RDBMS flavour, user/password, delay between "ping" requests, and the SQL statement to use. commit 841e2b661df7d4607dd5d660f32ca95ed45384eb Author: Nathan Scott Date: Fri Feb 22 21:10:06 2008 +1100 Add the SystemTap (http://sourceware.org/systemtap/) PMDA. This PMDA uses the SystemTap Linux kernel trace infrastructure to obtain performance data. Both SystemTap and this PMDA are easily configurable, allowing arbitrary trace points to be monitored. The PMDA itself is all Perl code, and thus easily extended to monitor additional types of trace information from SystemTap. The file $PCP_PMDAS_DIR/probes.stp contains the SystemTap script which will be run by the stap(1) command to insert the kernel instrumentation. It is intended that once suitable instrumentation has been found running SystemTap interactively, that a modified probes.stp and PMDA would then be installed to export the interesting data to PCP clients (for logging, charting, etc). commit 893acb1058bd17ee8614d2685ca9eefea281838b Author: Nathan Scott Date: Fri Feb 22 20:50:58 2008 +1100 Move simple and news Perl PMDA examples alongside their C/sh counterparts. commit 78d4377d272a019e6a64d9c6c4ae3ef36118ad31 Author: Nathan Scott Date: Fri Feb 22 20:38:01 2008 +1100 Updates to the Perl PMDA API, in particular supporting a popen(2) wrapper. We now pass an arbitrary data field into all the callbacks of each method (pipe/socket/tail-file/timer) of interrupting the main PDU loop, so that the PMDA can tell which item/instance/... was the source of the event. We now allow multiple timers as well. Cleaned up the PMDA.xs sources a fair bit, and pulled data structure definitions out into a separate header. The memcache Perl PMDA is now syntactically correct, but further work is required to make it functional.
