I know I have been promising for a while, but yes this release will happen real soon now :-) We have a late-breaking change that I'd like to try and include. Basically, it provides a callback hook for PMAPI functions such as pmFetch() to augment the select mask when blocked in __pmGetPDU(). One thing this would allow is a PMDA to also be a client (deadlock avoidance assumed). If anyone in open source land would be interested in helping out with this, please let me know. > Once that happens, I > believe interested parties (which now includes me) could petition SGI to > make the unreleased and unsupported PCP components (Java and DBMS chunks > in particular) available under the GPL to anyone who's willing to take > on the gatekeeper role. I do not anticipate any problems with this. In fact, not long ago, I created a SourceForge project for distributing PCP packages for various OSs (along with some other distributed computing tools). The first file release will happen in about a week, after I get the website polished up. I've finished off the MacOS port, including the production of an installable package. Solaris packages will come shortly after the the website is done. Aix and HP packages will come a bit later. Also, I've recently spoken to Michal Kara, and he has granted me stewardship of the pcpmon sources, which will be made available from the sourceforge site. The port of pcpmon to the mac is complete, and will be included in the upcoming release. The sourceforge project name is "Multi-system ToolWorks" The sourceforge site is: http://sourceforge.net/projects/reliable The project web site is: http://reliable.sourceforge.net I'm currently working on a redesign of the project web site, to be completed for the first file release. I was planning to announce all this shortly, after it was ready for prime time, but the rest of you have already begun the conversation - so here you have it. I agree with your point. The sourceforge search paradigm is somewhat limited, and we must arrange for a suitable solution or workaround. There are couple of open feature requests for adding search keywords to sf projects. At a more fundamental level, they do not have a way to suitably handle umbrella projects that have several sub-projects. I will be putting in a feature request regarding that issue. In the mean time, I can load up the project description with keywords. You are right in that we need to have a one-stop-shop for all things PCP, which is easy for the masses to find. >> >> I've finished off the MacOS port, including the production of an >> installable package. It will be a simple matter for Mark to diff the revision tags and get the mods. Michal can be reached at lemming@ucw.cz The pcpmon source situation is a bit messy. All the 1.3.3 sources that I was able to find are missing a few build-related files, e.g. pcpmon.glade. Michal had only a full copy of his 1.3.1+ sources. The glade file from his 1.3.1 sources does not fully reflect the 1.3.3 UI. I'm expecting additional problems when I try porting to other platforms. My Mac OS pcpmon branch is a bit of hack job, and it will take some fussing to get the changes back into the mainline, but it's all we have that works. If anyone has a complete set of Michal's 1.3.3 sources, please send them to me. >> The sourceforge project name is "Multi-system ToolWorks" >> The sourceforge site is: http://sourceforge.net/projects/reliable >> The project web site is: http://reliable.sourceforge.net >> >> I'm currently working on a redesign of the project web site, to >> be completed for the first file release. Hi Michael, Firstly, thanks for creating the new sf project. I agree with comments from others that it needs a more accurate title & keywords, but in concept it's an excellent step forward for PCP. Your changes are against pcp-2.4.0 (as currently on oss.sgi.com), right? The new release coming is pcp-2.5.0 so you'll need to reconcile against the new code base. That shouldn't be a big deal but I'd rather you did it and fed the resulting patches back to me. I'll push 2.5.0 up to oss.sgi.com as soon as I can. I was hoping to include some libpcp changes (as mentioned in earlier mail), but given the level of interest at the moment, it may be better just to push 2.5.0 up to oss asap, and then have a series of incremental minor releases as people feed patches back to me. Does this sound like a good plan for all? My understanding is that SGI has (internally) gone through all the necessary procedures to release this code under the GPL once a suitable gatekeeper has volunteered and on the understanding that SGI will provide no support for this code base (the products that were built around these particular PMDAs are long since moribund). In practical terms that probably means once we get organized on the outside, this is gated by Mark Goodwin's bandwidth to organize the package from the inside. I am not sure what you mean by a "suitable gatekeeper" though. When you consider for example how much Oracle has changed from Oracle 7 (which I believe was the target of the Oracle pmda) to Oracle 10g today - a massive rewrite of the pmda is probably required rather than just having someone act as a “gatekeeper”. I would imagine the other database pmda’s are in a similar mode of decay thus substantially diminishing the value of these agents. So, I am not really clear what your expectations are ... unless you are offering up your expertise as the gatekeeper – if so, you can have the "pcpaddons" sourceforge site. I merely set it up to facilitate and share the two pcp efforts I am currently working on. Alan .
