There is documentation for the API in PMAPI(3) and you can use the -D1 flag to get a verbose dump of PDU traffic between a client and pmcd, e.g. try this: pminfo -f -D1 kernel.all.load But otherwise you'll have to read the source. Look in /usr/include/pcp/{pmapi.h,impl.h} and below src/libpcp/src Thanks -- Mark From kenmcd@melbourne.sgi.com Thu Mar 31 18:23:04 2005 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list pcp); Thu, 31 Mar 2005 18:23:08 -0800 (PST) Received: from omx2.sgi.com (omx2-ext.sgi.com [192.48.171.19]) by oss.sgi.com (8.13.0/8.13.0) with ESMTP id j312Mwcn025221 for ; Thu, 31 Mar 2005 18:22:58 -0800 Received: from nodin.corp.sgi.com (nodin.corp.sgi.com [192.26.51.193]) by omx2.sgi.com (8.12.11/8.12.9/linux-outbound_gateway-1.1) with ESMTP id j3140DZF021277 for ; Thu, 31 Mar 2005 20:00:23 -0800 Received: from cthulhu.engr.sgi.com (cthulhu.engr.sgi.com [192.26.80.2]) by nodin.corp.sgi.com (SGI-8.12.5/8.12.10/SGI_generic_relay-1.2) with ESMTP id j312MSbT53672602 for ; Thu, 31 Mar 2005 18:22:28 -0800 (PST) Received: from ppp-kenmcd.melbourne.sgi.com (ppp-kenmcd.melbourne.sgi.com [134.14.52.219]) by cthulhu.engr.sgi.com (SGI-8.12.5/8.12.5) with ESMTP id j312KxlV9419736; Thu, 31 Mar 2005 18:21:05 -0800 (PST) Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2005 12:15:11 +1000 (EST) From: kenmcd@melbourne.sgi.com Reply-To: Ken McDonell To: Mike Werner cc: pcp@oss.sgi.com Subject: Re: PMCD-to-client Protocol Spec In-Reply-To: <20050331132108.A7227@corp.theblr.com> Message-ID: References: <20050331132108.A7227@corp.theblr.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.83/798/Thu Mar 31 01:54:41 2005 on oss.sgi.com X-Virus-Status: Clean X-archive-position: 437 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: pcp-bounce@oss.sgi.com Errors-to: pcp-bounce@oss.sgi.com X-original-sender: kenmcd@melbourne.sgi.com Precedence: bulk X-list: pcp On Thu, 31 Mar 2005, Mike Werner wrote: > PCP Team, > > Is there a specification (ASN.1 or otherwise) of the > PMCD-to-client protocol, which I might obtain? I can assure you it is _not_ ASN.1 ... PCP is for analyzing performance problems, not creating them ... 8^)> The message protocol and format is not a secret pminfo -D pdu -v will dump out the messages flowing in both directions between the client and pmcd. We don't have any documentation beyond that ... but more to the point I'm kinda curious as to why you're interested in this, as the only sensible way to use the infrastructure is via libpcp and there is detailed documentation available on that API. Roughly, each libpcp call maps onto 1 sent message and 1 received message.
