Firstly, you usually don't need to explicitly specify the pmns file when replaying an archive because the pmns is included in the archive itself. Does the folowing work: pmval -z -a test2.ds1 kernel.all.cpu.idle Otherwise, this error occurs when an archive has been corrupted, specifically when the archive label is corrupted. Check the three copied archive files on Apollo are byte-for-byte identical to the originals on ds1 (use sum or md5sum). If that's OK, then please post the archives to me or if you can't do that, send the pmdumplog -L output. thanks -- Mark From owner-pcp@oss.sgi.com Tue Jun 4 08:22:26 2002 Received: from oss.sgi.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.3/8.12.3) with ESMTP id g54FMPnC028941 for ; Tue, 4 Jun 2002 08:22:26 -0700 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.3/8.12.3/Submit) id g54FMPhR028940 for pcp-outgoing; Tue, 4 Jun 2002 08:22:25 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: oss.sgi.com: majordomo set sender to owner-pcp@oss.sgi.com using -f Received: from mailgw1a.lmco.com (mailgw1a.lmco.com [192.31.106.7]) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.3/8.12.3) with SMTP id g54FMHnC028930 for ; Tue, 4 Jun 2002 08:22:18 -0700 Received: from emss02g01.ems.lmco.com (relay2.ems.lmco.com [166.29.2.54]) by mailgw1a.lmco.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id g54FOAh31161; Tue, 4 Jun 2002 09:24:10 -0600 (MDT) Received: from CONVERSION-DAEMON by lmco.com (PMDF V5.2-33 #40644) id <0GX600A01TFNZ1@lmco.com>; Tue, 4 Jun 2002 09:24:08 -0600 (MDT) Received: from emss02i00.ems.lmco.com ([166.29.2.48]) by lmco.com (PMDF V5.2-33 #40644) with ESMTP id <0GX600JG1TF1QK@lmco.com>; Tue, 04 Jun 2002 09:23:26 -0600 (MDT) Received: by emss02i00.ems.lmco.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) id ; Tue, 04 Jun 2002 09:23:25 -0600 Content-return: allowed Date: Tue, 04 Jun 2002 09:23:16 -0600 From: "Rapacki, George R" Subject: RE: How to do data reduction on a machine different from the data collection machine? I repeated my data collection on ds1, brought the data to Apollo and was able to use pmval. I did try your command "pmval -z -a test2.ds1 kernel.all.cpu.idle" without success on the old data collection. If I get a chance I'll try the sum and md5sum commands. Thanks for your help. Of course now that I can collect and extract the performance data the question becomes what does it mean. Most of the metrics have fairly self-explanatory descriptions but others are not so clear to me. Can you point me to a url or some discussion group that has definitions of the metrics generated by PCP? Finally, we have an installation of SGI machines for which I will need to measure the CPU, Memory, Disk and I/O usage. I know PCP is available commercially for IRIX machines and would like to get a price quote for PCP for IRIX. Could you forward this e-mail to the appropriate SGI sales person and ask them to call me at 805-348-2124 or respond to this e-mail? Would it make sense to split the PCP source into client, server, and library chunks? The XFS tools are kind of like that (you have to do some install-dev and install-lib steps to get everything to work.) It would make porting PCP a little easier (less code to wade through initially) as well as allow installs on machines that don't need monitoring (i.e. Sharp Zaurus running Linux -- wireless PCP monitor anyone?) Even though that was phrased as a question, that was really the suggestion ;) The question part of this email has to do with the Solaris port. My employment contract is coming to an end shortly and I was wondering if anyone had any leads/ideas on companies that might be willing to sponsor the rest of the Solaris port? I 'sponsored' the client stuff during my last stint of unemployment with my savings account, and that's empty now. Regards, Corey Cole --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Would it make sense to split the PCP source into > client, server, and library chunks? ... I would prefer to leave PCP how it is - internally in SGI we have a single src tree for the open src and proprietary PCP pieces, and splitting the tree will make this considerably less manageable. However, I'd be very keen to start a new open source project maybe called "PCP Open Monitor" or something. We could set up public CVS on oss.sgi.com. Some initial contents might be: * pmhelp: a simple GTK tree based PCP help viewer (written by me). * Mike Mason's version of gtop/libgtop (the Gnome System Monitor) that uses PCP as the collector back-end. Don't know what Mike (or the Gnome people for that matter) would think about this ... * the PCPMON charting package by Michal Kara (if he agrees) * maybe a gtk/pcp library of reusable "performace gadgets" or something What do folks think of this idea? Would anyone be willing to put in the time to contribute? I can set up the cvs archive and initial src tree. thanks -- Mark From owner-pcp@oss.sgi.com Mon Jun 17 05:42:30 2002 Received: from oss.sgi.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.3/8.12.3) with ESMTP id g5HCgUnC016592 for ; Mon, 17 Jun 2002 05:42:30 -0700 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.3/8.12.3/Submit) id g5HCgU7U016591 for pcp-outgoing; Mon, 17 Jun 2002 05:42:30 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: oss.sgi.com: majordomo set sender to owner-pcp@oss.sgi.com using -f Received: from grumpy.moser-inc.net (168-215-193-10.dslindiana.com [168.215.193.10] (may be forged)) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.3/8.12.3) with SMTP id g5HCgJnC016588 for ; Mon, 17 Jun 2002 05:42:20 -0700 Received: from moser-inc.com (dhcp024-208-194-166.indy.rr.com [24.208.194.166]) by grumpy.moser-inc.net (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id g5HCnjq25156; Mon, 17 Jun 2002 07:49:45 -0500 Message-ID: <3D0DD979.9020100@moser-inc.com> Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 07:43:37 -0500 From: Alan Hoyt User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0rc1) Gecko/20020417 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: ccole@speakeasy.net CC: pcp@oss.sgi.com Subject: Re: Suggestion and question References: <200206142244.g5EMi8b23781@localhost.localdomain> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-pcp@oss.sgi.com Precedence: bulk Content-Length: 2259 Lines: 80 If you could email me a gzipped tar file with any tips/comments - I would greatly appreciate it! - Alan - ccole@speakeasy.net wrote: >The status is that the client tools (and their libraries) work.
