It compiles in the kernel 2.4.17 but when we invoke KDB at the startup with the Pause key (on an USB keyboard), we get a frozen screen and nothing is displayed when we strike a key. We think that the problem comes from the USB. The USB driver is included in the kernel (not as module) and the keyboard works at boot time. AFAIK USB requires interrupt support which will not work in kdb, kdb deliberately runs with interrupts disabled. A year ago, Greg Kroah-Hartman (USB maintainer) told me that it *might* be possible to write I/O code for USB in polling mode but it does not exist yet. After discussions with one of the USB mainatiners, it might be possible to run a keyboard in boot protocol mode and poll it. Somebody who understands USB needs to write the USB equivalent of get_kbd_char(). It needs to implement part of the host controller code in polling mode then use a modified version of usb_kbd.c. I suggest you use a serial console for now. Apple might have a tech note on how to debug MAC OS-X without a serial port, possibly using USB. Apply the common patch for your kernel plus at least one architecture dependent patch, the architecture patches activate kdb. The naming convention for kdb patches is :- vx.y The version of kdb. x.y is updated as new features are added to kdb. - -v.p.s The kernel version that the patch applies to. 's' may include -pre, -rc or whatever numbering system the kernel keepers have thought up this week. - -common The common kdb code. Everybody needs this. - -i386 Architecture dependent code for i386. - -ia64 Architecture dependent code for ia64, etc. - -n If there are multiple kdb patches against the same kernel version then the last number is incremented. To build kdb for your kernel, apply the common kdb patch which is less than or equal to the kernel v.p.s, taking the highest value of '-n' if there is more than one. Apply the relevant arch dependent patch with the same value of 'vx.y-v.p.s-', taking the highest value of '-n' if there is more than one. For example, to use kdb v2.1 for i386 on kernel 2.4.18, apply kdb-v2.1-2.4.18-common-1 kdb-v2.1-2.4.18-i386-1 in that order. I apoligize if this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. We have installed kdb here to debug our product, but sometimes we suddenly get a blank screen on console and the CAPS LOCK and SCROLL LOCK leds are blinking. The blinking caps lock and scroll lock mean that the kernel has dropped into kdb. You have to be using a text console, not X11 and the console must be directed to the current screen, not to another virtual tty. If the problem occurs while you are in X11, use a serial console instead and debug via the serial console. It is possible that you accidently hit the pause button and it dropped into kdb in the background. If this is the case, you can (even in X11), type "go" and and hope the machine comes back to life. If indeed it was a panic, then it will not come back to life. -tduffy From owner-kdb@oss.sgi.com Thu Feb 28 10:36:02 2002 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by oss.sgi.com (8.11.2/8.11.3) id g1SIa2C17695 for kdb-outgoing; Thu, 28 Feb 2002 10:36:02 -0800 Received: from mcbain.stg.com (mcbain.stg.com [65.162.207.13]) by oss.sgi.com (8.11.2/8.11.3) with SMTP id g1SIZv917692 for ; Thu, 28 Feb 2002 10:35:59 -0800 Received: from mcbain.stg.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mcbain.stg.com (Netscape Messaging Server 4.15) with SMTP id GS97JR00.837 for ; Thu, 28 Feb 2002 11:35:51 -0600 Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002 11:35:50 -0600 From: "Steven Bytnar" To: kdb@oss.sgi.com Subject: KDB_ENTER & interrupt level Message-ID: <20020228113550.G15221@stg.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i Sender: owner-kdb@oss.sgi.com Precedence: bulk There's a comment in asm-i386/kdb.h regarding KDB_ENTER that says: "If it is intended to be used from interrupt level, it must use a non-maskable entry method." Is that describing a kernel developer's view of using KDB_ENTER, or is this describing how someone should implement it for other architectures? In other words, if I want to call KDB_ENTER from an arbitrary kernel module at interrupt level, do I need to take special precautions?
