Film: Kilowatt Ours by Meaningful Movies, Sept 5th, by donation.  We suck a lot of= energy,=20 the majority of which is still generated by good old-fashioned coal.=  =20 Learn and discuss the side effects of coal-generated power, and prom= ises=20 of alternatives.  Actually, this topic brings up an interesting= side=20 question: If you buy an electric car, where the electricity is gener= ated=20 by coal, is that a net positive or negative for the environment?

= BEAN=20 Scholarship Pub Crawl, Sept 5.  BEAN is a fun group of youn= g=20 professionals working for some of Seattle's most famous companies. E= ach=20 year they get together for a pub crawl party that raises money to he= lp=20 send kids to college.  Go drink for a reason.

: PS= BJ's=20 Best Workplaces Annual Winner's Panel, Sept 11th, $40.  If = whippings=20 are failing to improve employee moral, then learn from the winners.&= nbsp; The=20 good news is, the majority of best practices do not take more money = to=20 implement.  Understand how employee morale improves retention a= nd=20 productivity, and how it can help you recruit talented staff.=

Fashion Faux Pas to Fash= ion=20 Fabulous, Sept 6th, $25.  'Tis the fashion season for Seatt= le.  The=20 local designers come together to showcase their one-of-a-kind gowns = and=20 dresses, and then sell them in auction style to the highest bidder.&= nbsp; The=20 proceeds of this event go to a non-profit providing formal gowns to = less=20 fortunate high school girls, so they can have their own little princ= ess=20 memories.

: Support Group for Grieving Mothers of Adult Children, Sept 8th,= =20 free, of a monthly Mother's Tea, of sharing stories and experiences = with=20 other mothers dealing with every parent's worst trauma.

Music: <= /b> Hendrix Fest, Se= pt=20 7th, free.  Fans who once= =20 sneaked out to witness a Hendrix Concert are now returning  wit= h family=20 in tow as the Baby Boomers take the Gen-Xers  under their wing = giving=20 them an education of how the music of the past has and continues to= =20 influence the music of today.

: Calligraphy Demonstration, Sept 4th, free.  The Zen master= =20 demonstrates the art and craft of calligraphy, explaining its histor= y=20 and emphasis on immediate and spontaneous expression.  Go and i= mprove=20 your penmanship.

Light Bulbs to Dollar Signs: Turning Your Idea into a Profitable=20 Business, Sept 4th, $25.  Actually, million-dollar ideas ar= e=20 plentiful; it's the successful execution that's rare.  This mee= ting=20 covers best practices for translating that idea in your noggin into = a=20 profitable business.  Also, they discuss how to evaluate your o= wn idea=20 in terms of market size, profitability, etc., to help decide if your= =20 idea is actually the big money-maker that you think it is.

Taiwan= : Your=20 Gateway to Asia, Sept 10th, $15.  Taiwan and Washington sta= te are=20 already buddy-buddies.  We do a lot of trading back-and-forth, = and have=20 more sister-city relationships than we know what to do with.  G= o hear=20 about Taiwan's prosperity, and how you can get a piece of it.=

Organization: RAW, for those who like their food uncooked.  This means ea= ting=20 mostly plant-based food that has not been processed, and for the bra= ver=20 souls, consuming unpasteurized dairy products, raw meats and eggs, a= nd=20 sushi.  On the surface, it seems like=97with this sort of diet= =97you'd end=20 up as a bland, wimpy vegan, which is probably why this group exists.=

C89.5: This is a publi= c=20 station with one type of music - hyper-peppy.  They only play d= ance and=20 party tracks 24/7, whether it's Saturday night or Monday morning.&nb= sp; So,=20 you get a bunch of munged synthesized versions of rock and pop class= ics=20 that sounds vaguely familiar to your regular favorites.  The re= deeming=20 aspect of this station is, since it's public, there are no ads, so= =20 you're listening to 57 minutes of aerobic-worthy music per hour.

KRKO: This is one of those stat= ions=20 that is so far out, it's actually in.  They play the favorites = of the=20 crusty old-farts, the same old tunes you'd hear playing at the Eagle= or=20 the VFW, the type of stuff the WWII crowd digs.  Their music is= like=20 playing the accordion, where it's so dorky, it's actually kinda cool= =2E

KKNW: This little st= ation=20 works on a different model.  This station sells its air time to= the=20 public.  Anybody with the bucks can put together their own pack= age, get=20 on the radio, and then design their own program and sell air time.&n= bsp; So,=20 what you get is a bunch of alternative talk radio subjects too fring= e=20 for regular radio.  With a bunch of different programming by al= l sorts=20 of people, you get the mix of viewpoints that makes it interesting.&= nbsp;=20 There are some people with good information and thoughtful perspecti= ves,=20 and other programs where you just gotta wonder what color is the sky= in=20 their world?

Seminar:=20 Handwriting Analysis, Evaluating Ho= w=20 People Cope with Change, Sept 20th, $60.  Learn how to sepa= rate the=20 resilient from the rigid at this seminar, predicting how people adap= t to=20 changing circumstances.  Go with an open mind, but keep your sk= epticism=20 available.  Graphology in general suffers from a lack of empiri= cal=20 evidence, and the British Psychological Society ranks graphology as= =20 predictable as astrology.

We're=20 a Bunch of Whiners:
Sometimes, we just can't seem to be happy no matter what.

Gas Prices and Traffic:  It seems that we want both c= heap gas=20 and speed limit commutes and complain endlessly when one or the othe= r is=20 out of whack.  One silver lining to $4/gallon gas was that it c= leared=20 off the freeway.  For years, Metro was trying to boost ridershi= p.  When=20 it got the big ridership bump it was always crying for, then it was= =20 complaining about the budget-busting cost of diesel.

Affordable Housing and the Quality of Life:=20 When the average house price nears half a million in the city, we=20= complain how it's beyond the range of the working class.  Then,= when=20 more affordable housing is built, we complain about crowding and los= s of=20 neighborhood character.  When families move way out into the 'b= urbs to=20 find a house they can afford, then we complain about the consequence= s of=20 long commutes and carbon footprints.  We complain about the cos= t of the=20 bureaucracy of city regulations, but hate the cookie-cutter houses= =20 developers would otherwise throw up.

Mental Recession: According to one of McCain's advisors, we're a nation of whiners.  Supposedly, one percent growth = isn't too=20 bad.  Globalization has brought an export boom, but we only wal= low in=20 bad news.  According to advisors, those other issues, of job lo= ses,=20 credit meltdowns - those are irritating side issues.

Cool Video: Will It Blend: Ch= uck=20 Norris.  These guys have an entire run of videos, of putting=20 wacky stuff into their power blender.

Networking<= /SPAN>Company Picnic Seattle , Sept 25th, $39.  Entrepreneurs tend to be a lively lot, so it'll be i= nteresting to throw them into a picnic scene.  Go mix with others who h= ave great ideas, smarts, and ambition, who will end up building the next gre= at thing.  Go learn from others with new perspectives and have a chest = of business war stories to share.

Fi= lm: Couch Film Fest , Sept 27th, $10.  Get this - instead of hosting films in the studio or= theater, they're getting people to open their living rooms for smaller, mor= e intimate, settings.  You go and watch short films while wedged into t= he cracks on some dude's couch.  Films rotate on the hour, with an afte= rnoon intermission.  Keep any change you find in cushions.

He= alth: Go Healthy , Sept 26th, free, to help keep kids, and parents, from morphing into jelly-= bellies.  Childhood obesity is now the number one childhood health conc= ern, even above smoking.  Kids now are even getting adult ailments, suc= h as high blood pressure and cholesterol.  So, roll the kid off the TV = couch and on to this event.

Da= nce: All Tharp by Pacific Northwest Ballet, starting Sept 25th, $25+.  PNB kicks off = the new season with an American dance heavyweight.  The show includes t= wo world premieres, so someday, you might get the bragging rights of being t= he first to have sen it.  Also, check out the preview videos.

Re= al Estate: Can that deal still be financed? , Sept 25th, $15.  With the mortgage meltdown, you can imagine how exci= ted banks are to write new mortgages right now.  Unless you have a heft= y 20% down payment, how you can purchase that new house?  At this meeti= ng, the pros discuss how the rules have changed, and how you can play in thi= s new sandbox.

In= sects: Bug Blast , Sept 28th, free with regular museum admission.  Is there anything coo= ler than a bug with twenty legs?  Go down, look at the bugs, and maybe = even eat a few.  Actually, you already are, but you're just not aware o= f little bug parts leaking into our food supply.  There are plenty of h= ands-on activities for kids to explore and expand their bug interest.  = Next to dinosaurs, bugs are the coolest thing.

Wo= men's Health: WWISH kick-off , Oct 2nd, $20.  This is a new online magazine for Women's Wellness and= Integrated Social Health, a woman-to-woman sort of thing.  Learn how o= ther women turn their struggles into triumphs, like one of those Lifetime ne= twork TV shows.  Best of luck to them.  These online magazines hav= e a poor success rate, but then again, the costs of digital publication real= ly lower the financial barriers to entry.

Fa= mily: Park In the Dark,<= /A> Sept 25-27th, free.  When the sun goes down in the UW Arboretum, th= e activity level goes up.  Learn about the real nocturnal animals and u= se your "deer ears" to hear night sounds.  Plus, the park at night has = a wonderfully eerie feeling.

Wo= men's Business: Women Business Owners Networking Lunch , Sept 25th, $46.  This group is really getting to be the power group f= or women running their own businesses.  Their award winners are the who= =19s-who of female owned businesses in this area.  At this lunch, a med= ia consultant discusses how to gain publicity to generate customers, increas= ing your business.

Organization: NIRI Seattle, of National Inv= estor Relations.  With the financial meltdown last week, interest is ce= rtainly on investing.  Since they're focus is on investor relations, an= d everybody's investment is tanking, they're probably working double overtim= e right now.  Also, gotta wonder if these folks saw it coming, or are t= hey just apologetic mouthpieces?

Where The Sin= gle Guys Are:
If you believe the whining of the single ladies around h= ere, it's difficult to meet men.  Plus, apparently, guys are too scared= y cat to approach.  So, where do guys hang out?

Political Campaigns:  Campaigning for wo= rthy causes tends to be balanced, but the political offices are male-dominat= ed.  These are short and intense in duration, so when you're working un= til midnight eating = cold Chinese food together, something good is going to happen.

Rock Climbing: Here, it's easy to strike up t= he conversation since these guys are pretty social, and the atmosphere is al= ready charged with excitement.  Play it safe and hit the indoor center = first.

Casual Sports: You get to know a guy over a period of time.  The gender break down is= about 60/40, so the odds are in the gal's favor.  These games are more= for the fun of it, instead of competitive.  It's more of an excuse to = go get a beer afterwards.  Check out Underdog Sports.

Online: If you're willing to sift through the pervies and dw= eebs, there's always Craigs L= ist, with a slice of good guys left.

<= B>Cool Video: Here's what could happen to the 520 bridge during an earthquake.  Th= is simulation will creep you out a bit the next time you're actually driving= across.  Hope they come up with that replacement soon.
