To do this with Solaris you would need to find out if the kernel provides anything like that and then port FAM to use it. If something exists then you could use the DNotify patches as an example to follow. I built a FAM 2.9 (2 years ago) using it for solaris 2.8. The package & patch are available at http://www.rcsnet.net/pub/SgiFam/fam-2.6.9solaris.tar.gz http://www.rcsnet.net/pub/SgiFam/fam-2.6.9-solaris2.8.patch Fam is monitoring file/dirs by active scan. It is not the optimal way of running, but at least it enables you to go on building gnome.
