No, there isn't. I believe Solaris has a special device, /dev/poll, which is designed to perform monitoring in a way similar to IMon, but this may have been introduced in Solaris 7 or 8. We do not yet support this. If you're planning on adding such support: - you might like to apply the DNotify patch and use to Monitor pseudo-interface it provides - you might like to wait until I finish FAM 2.7, in which I plan to provide a much more generic file monitor interface, and reworked autoconf scripts, but this is unlikely to be finished for a few months -- Michael Wardle Adacel Technologies From Remi@Cohen-Scali.com Thu Mar 13 20:30:49 2003 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list fam); Thu, 13 Mar 2003 20:30:56 -0800 (PST) Received: from rcsnet.net (marchevallees.net2.nerim.net [62.212.112.17]) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.8/8.12.5) with SMTP id h2E4Ulq9001606 for ; Thu, 13 Mar 2003 20:30:48 -0800 Received: from Cohen-Scali.com (IDENT:rcoscali@dns.rcsnet.net [192.168.1.50]) by rcsnet.net (8.12.7/8.12.7) with ESMTP id h2E4Uc0l004174; Fri, 14 Mar 2003 05:30:38 +0100 Message-ID: <3E715AEC.80006@Cohen-Scali.com> Date: Fri, 14 Mar 2003 05:30:36 +0100 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?R=E9mi_Cohen-Scali?= User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3-rcsnet) Gecko/20030311 X-Accept-Language: fr-fr, fr, en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Michael Wardle CC: File Alteration Monitor Mailling List Subject: Re: [SISE FAM] FAM on Solaris2.8 References: <3E7140EA.9030300@Cohen-Scali.com> <200303141358.04565.michael.wardle@adacel.com> In-Reply-To: <200303141358.04565.michael.wardle@adacel.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-AntiVirus: checked by AntiVir Milter 1.0.0.8; AVE 6.18.0.2; VDF 6.18.0.12 X-archive-position: 93 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: fam-bounce@oss.sgi.com Errors-to: fam-bounce@oss.sgi.com X-original-sender: Remi@Cohen-Scali.com Precedence: bulk X-list: fam Michael Wardle wrote: >Excellent. Sorry, no I don't. Can't you just install FAM package and then the SGI::FAM Perl module? You can install FAM using: # rpm -iv fam-2.6.8-1.rpm You can install SGI::FAM using: # perl -MCPAN -eshell cpan> install SGI::FAM Perl should automatically install any other required Perl modules from CPAN, including MD5 and File::PathConvert. Hi! You do not need fam to monitor login/logout on a unix machine. This is done by /bin/login writing to /var/log/wtmp. last(1) displays the statistics, see its manpage. I would suggest looking into the authentication system used on most GNU/Linux distributions: PAM. It may be possible to have PAM perform a custom command when a user logs in or out. I don't think monitoring /dev/console is a very good idea. You would be better monitoring /var/log/auth, /var/log/secure, or /dev/log/wtmp. Another method you could use is the watch feature in tcsh. NOTHING. I have just tried installing SGI::FAM on a Red Hat 7.3 host and a Red Hat 8.0 host. After having some problems installing the SGI::FAM module (it seems I needed to install MD5, Getopt::Mixed, File::PathConvert, and Test::Helper first), the sample script on the SGI::FAM home page seems to work fine: Have you ensured that FAM is correctly running and responding to requests on your Red Hat 8.0 host? Try adding "-d" to the server flags in /etc/xinetd.d/sgi_fam, running a FAM client (such as Nautilus, Konqueror, or the test program that comes in the test subdirectory of the FAM sources) and viewing the system log file. Are you attempting to monitor any files which have symbolic links in their path (of course this should work, but it could be a flaw in SGI::FAM or one of its dependent Perl modules such as File::PathConvert, which now seems to be deprecated). A reason you would get only the Exists and EndExists events is you can see the directory you are monitoring, but do not have browse (chmod u+x) privileges on that directory. Are you sure you have the necessary privileges? Have you tried monitoring another directory? I have a feeling that the Gentoo Linux has been making IMon available for recent Linux 2.4 kernels. If someone could make the effort to extract their patch from their source tree, I'd be happy to put it in the FAM download area on oss.sgi.com. -- Michael Wardle Adacel Technologies
